Day 5 – 50 Day Leap : shake it off, shake it off
When you show your own leadership by changing up how you want to be seen you might get some unexpected results. Change makes people uncomfortable and your coworkers or family may not be your biggest cheerleaders.Others might be hostile. Sometimes those haters are going to hate.
Let them. Ignore them. Keep going and keep taking actions towards how you want to be seen.
Yesterday you took some action.
How did it go? How did you do in yesterday in taking an action in bringing to life how you want to be seen?
I hope it went well and you are excited about continuing. And if you stumbled a bit I want to share a story with you.
My friend Beverly had had always been thought of as the quiet, team player that no one paid too much attention to. She was good at her work and because she was quiet she was rarely asked what she thought about the future of the team or the projects they are working on.
The real surprise was when a new person, Rick,, joined the team and had an immediate detrimental impact. Ok basically he was a jerk, a bully and surprisingly not anywhere as knowledgeable as he seemed to think he was.
Everyone complained about Rick but some how this new guy was taking over in a way that was hurting the projects the team and the customers. Beverly hemmed and hawed and then made a plan. She told me that she really liked her job and her team – until Rick showed up.
At the next team meeting Rick went on a rant about changing a procedure he thought was stupid and irrelevant. Beverly spoke up. Quiet Beverly spoke with a voice that revealed a spine of steel.
She didn’t tell Rick why the procedure was so important. She chose instead to ask him questions. She wanted him to explain his thoughts. Rick started out fine all full of bluster and it got pretty uncomfortable for her. Beverly continued to probe to ask deeper questions regarding the specifics of the process it became clear that Rick didn’t have a clue what he was talking about.
The whole team was pretty uncomfortable at this point and some were giving Beverly a look to cut it out. She didn’t and it was a good thing. It was the last question she asked that nailed it, “Rick, what are the unintended consequences of doing this?”
He thought and had nothing. But the team did. Slowly the group started to list them off . It got a bit animated and now Rick strated to get quiet. He didn’t have a response and ultimately agreed with what they were talking about.
Ok Beverly’s story isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. Rick was pretty cool towards Beverly for a few days. And there were still some team members who weren’t happy she got into it in the first place. Beverly didn’t care. She made a decision to be seen in a different way and she did it in her style.
It gave her even more confidence even though Rick was still a thorn in her side.
In the podcast today I share a bit of an embarrassing story when I stepped it up. The point of both of these stories is to keep going. Keep taking steps to be seen the way that you choose to.
You may get some haters or some giggles as you get started. Just shake it off . Sometimes it really can be funny – laugh with it and keep going.
Do it again today – on more step. Show us who you are.
