On today’s show we have Terri Peña, MD, MBA, and Certified Functional Medicine Physician.
Terri and I kept crossing paths with mutual interests. I knew she would be a great person to tell her story as a woman in medicine and her journey to Functional Medicine.
Terri has some great stories– some surprising and some not so much, but all add up to outgrowing the traditional insurance-driven constraints of practicing medicine to moving beyond that to the fascinating approach she takes to Functional Medicine now.
Functional medicine looks at the underlying issues of health challenges, rather than just telling people to pop a pill and move on. I love it! It’s thoughtful, caring and you know what– it takes time to have real conversations.

Here is the Box Breathing exercise that she mentions as a powerful tool you can use when you recognize that your body is becoming stressed and a simple way to interrupt the stress pattern:
- Sitting down, shoulders back, feet flat, breathe in slowly through your nose to the count of 6
- Hold that breath for a count of 3
- Exhale through your nose slowly to the count of 6
- Hold for a count of 3.
Repeat several times and your body will feel relaxed.
